  1. When is Matariki celebrated?

Matariki is celebrated just before dawn at the beginning of June.


  1. What are the signs that Matariki has arrived? (Write down 2 signs)

 The two signs are the seven bright stars and a thin sliver of a new moon appearing in the sky.


  1. Where do the people of New Zealand celebrate Matariki?

People celebrate Matariki all around the whole of New Zealand.


  1. What does Matariki celebrate?

Matariki celebrates Maori New Year.


  1. Name 4 different places and write how they celebrate Matariki in each of these 4 places.

Waitangi celebrates Matariki by planting native trees.

 Kaikohe celebrates Matariki by doing a Kapa-haka.


Whangarei celebrates Matariki by flying kites.


Kerikeri celebrates Matariki by waiting on the hill at Kororipo for the celebrations to begin.


  1. Name 2 items of clothing the warrior wears.

They were wearing Maro and Pake.


  1. What are the clothing garments made from?

 The Pake is made from flax,feathers, and hemp cloths and maro is made from flax, feathers, and hemp cloths as well.

  1. What do we call these clothing items?

 The clothing items are called maro and pake.


  1. Name 3 weapons the warriors use

The weapons are called taiaha, tomahawk, and a musket.

  • Welcome with a powhiri

  • Doing a speech

  • Sings a waita

  • Blowing the shell trumpet

  • The visitors thank the Nga Puhi people.

  • The visitors sing a waiata

  • They say a karakia

  • Then they Hongi with their Nga Puhi friends
